JAWORZNO, Ape 23 (SW) - Djurgården/Älvsjö's finnish attacker Laura Kalmari earned her 100th international cap when Finland won against Poland with 1-5 in Jaworzno this saturday. 26 year old Kalmari began her internationals against Iceland in 1996. A year later when Finland faced Iceland again, she scored her first international goal, which secured a 2-0 win for Finland.
Kalmari's international career has been a resounding success. Since 1994, when Finland won the U-16 European Championships, Kalmari has spearheaded the advance of womens football in finnish media while scoring many important goals for her team. Best moment of her international career so far has been the 2005 European Championships in England, where Finland qualified to semi finals, but ended up losing to Germany.
Her club career has been even more succesful. She has several finnish championships with HJK Helsinki and a W-league championship with Boston Renegades of USA. While playing in swedish Umeå IK, Kalmari won the Damallsvenskan and the Swedish Cup in 2002 and the UEFA Cup in 2003 and 2004. Naturally during these years of success, Kalmari was awarded with several best player and top goalscorer -awards. She was also, like her international teammate goalkeeper Satu Kunnas, nominated for the FIFA female player of the year 2005 -award.
