DORTMUND, Jun 14 (SW) - With an injury time goal from Oliver Neuville, Germany beat Poland and are practically through to the round of sixteen.
The first yellow card came in less than three minutes, when Jacek Krzynowek fouled Bernd Schneider and was cautioned by the Spanish referee Luis Medina. The first chance was for Poland in the ninth minute. Maciej Zurawski tried a shot on goal, but keeper Jens Lehmann saved. A minute later, Miroslav Klose came close to opening the score, entering the area from the left side before firing a low shot from about five meters, but the goalkeeper, Artur Boruc, stood in the right place. And the Werder Bremen forward was even closer in the 22nd minute. A cross from Philipp Lahm allows the unmarked Klose to head on goal, but the player fails to get his head to the ball properly and misses. With the first half hour played, the Germans took the initiative and tried pressurizing the Polish defense. In the 35th minute, Lahm's low pass reached Lukas Podolski, and the new Bayern Munich signing turned around the ball but his following shot went straight into the keeper's hands. Six minutes later, Bastian Schweinsteiger received the ball from Podolski but then shot well over the crossbar, but the Germans once again confirmed their dominance in the last part of the first half. And just before half time, Podolski had another chance but failed to get the ball past Boruc from close range. Again, the opportunity was created by Philipp Lahm. The Germans continued their dominance after the break. Six minutes into the second half, Klose had another chance but missed a left-wing cross. Germany captain Michael Ballack was yellow-carded for a foul on Ireneusz Jelen in the 58th minute. In the 65th minute, a Frings free kick bounced off the wall, and Klose's following shot in the rebound was well saved by Boruc. For the last 25 minutes, Germany coach Jürgen Klinsmann took off Arne Friedrich and replaced the player with Borussia Dortmund's David Odonkor. And five minutes later, Germany's other striker Lukas Podolski was replaced as well, and the experienced Oliver Neuville came on for the final phase. Poland's Radoslav Sobolewski was given a second yellow card for a foul on Klose, and had to leave the pitch. The midfielder's first booking was for a foul on Ballack in the first half. In the last ten minutes, Germany continued to push for the winning goal but the Polish defense used all their energy to maintain the scoreless result. The Germans, known for their habit of scoring in the last minute, almost did so in the 90th but first Klose, and then Ballack hit the crossbar. Odonkor then scored but the goal did not count as the referee had already whistled for off-side. 1-0 Oliver Neuville 91st minute And a minute later, it did happen. A cross from Odonkor was met by substitute Oliver Neuville, who finally managed to beat the defense and goalkeeper Boruc for 1-0. Nothing more happened in the remaining time as Poland were stunned and the Germans easily controlled. Germany are now practically through to the next round, while Poland should count on a ticket home. |
