BERN, Jun 6 (SW) - Swiss striker Johan Vonlanthen was recently removed from his national squad due to injury, but feels fits and wants to play at the upcoming World Cup.
The twenty year old forward suffered a hamstring injury two weeks ago, and was replaced with Hakan Yakin. FIFA rules say that injured players can be replaced until 24 hours before the team's first match at the World Cup. According to Vonlanthen, he is ready to play and should not have been replaced at all. "I feel fit and I am ready to train. The last fitness test, on June 2nd, had as result I am absolutely without pain," Vonlanthen told 'Blick'. Doctor Heinz Bühlman, who was responsible for Martina Hingis' return to top level tennis, agrees with the player: "Vonlanthen is physically healthy." Vonlanthen continued to say: "The rules say that you can only replace a player if he is injured. That's not the case now. I am healthy, I can play and I don't accept that they want to take the World Cup from me. Games are being played and I don't like it." Switzerland team doctor Cuno Wetzel revealed that it is highly unlikely that the player will be re-included. |
