LONDON (BURNHAM), Sep 24 (SW) – Charlton Athletic won their game at Fulham WFC easily with 2-7. Eniola Aluko made the difference with her mental strength and three goals in the second half. Fulham scored their first two goals in the Premier League this season.
Fulham WFC survived a hot summer after being dumped by parent club Fulham FC. Club president Mohamed El Fayed got rid of the team on financial grounds, with media attention and attendances too low. The women’s team that avoided relegation from the Premier League would be dissolved, which would mean the end of the once so famous Fulham WFC. But some players and sponsors restarted the team this summer, rebuilding the club from scratch. Main problem was that many players left the club to search for success elsewhere. This resulted in a bad season start with losses against Chelsea (0-5), Arsenal (14-0), Cardiff City (0-5) and Leeds United (0-1), with the limited 0-1 loss against Leeds United giving some comfort. Fulham's Fred Brokwell told Soccerway that the organisation is getting better and better. “We have a nice ground in Burnham now, and players are coming back to our club.” In the first half of today's match Fulham WFC performed surprisingly well, though it was Sarah Snare (Charlton Athletic) that opened the score by running through the Fulham defence on five minutes. Ten minutes later the suprising first Fulham league goal of the season was scored by Danielle Farmer. She dribbled past two Charlton defenders to score in the far corner. The youthful Fulham team stood tall until four minutes into first half injury time. Caren Hills stroked home from outside the box (1-2). Another goal just after the break through the middle by Sarah Snare made it 1-3. Fulhams Amy Ram hit one back, but after that the strength and quality of Eniola Aluko decided the game in twelve minutes. Aluko scored three nice goals to make it 2-6. “Aluko was good today, she worked hard and was unselfish. Her movement of the ball and her passing was perfect, and she scored some nice goals. The rest of the team should follow her lead,” Manager Keith Boanas said after the match. “The overall performance of Charlton was bad, especially in the first half the team had a poor mental approach. In the half time break I had to give a few kicks on the back sides of the players to make a better second half.” Boanas thinks that Fulham WFC will survive as a club, but that they won’t survive in the premier league.
