SHENYANG (SW) - Olympic favorites Germany needed two goals in extra time to shake off the Swedish women in a close quarter final on Friday.

No goals were scored in regular time at Shenyang Olympic Stadium and extra time was needed to make the difference.

Just before the end of the first half in extra time, it was Kerstin Garefrekes to finally break the deadlock and put the Germans in the lead.

Simone Laudehr added a second with five minutes left to go to end Sweden's hopes for a late escape.

Germany are now scheduled to face Brazil in what should be a highly entertaining semi final clash on Monday.
