FRANKFURT, May 24 (SW) - FFC Frankfurt have won the UEFA Women's Cup, beating Swedish side Umea IK 3-2 after a hectic thriller in Germany.
After last week's 1-1 result in the first leg, the pressure was on Umea to score at least one goal in Europe's financial capital. But Conny Pohlers, who also scored in the first game, did so again after just seven minutes and went on to add a second ten minutes after the break. Dahlqvist converted a penalty in the 67th minute to give the Swedes new hope but Wimbersky restored the two-goal gap four minutes later. Umea continued to attack and were awarded for their hard work when Östberg scored for 3-2 in the 84th minute. But the guests needed another goal to beat their opponents on away goals. The home crowd was in for some thrilling minutes with Marta hitting the crossbar from a free kick and Bachmann having her effort bounce off the same bar in the final minute. It is the third time that Frankfurt win Europe's most important women's club tournament. The Germans beat Umea as well in 2002, but lost to the Scandinavians in the 2004 final. In 2006, Frankfurt were too strong for Turbine Potsdam. |
