UEFA Women's Championship 2009

The Netherlands are through to the semi finals of the UEFA Women's Championship, having beaten France 5-4 in a crazy penalty shoot-out after neither side scored in regular and extra time.

The French were slight favorites ahead of this game, but their opponents did well to limit the amount of opportunities and created a number of chances for themselves as well.

Penalties were needed to decide which team faces England in the semi finals however, and both teams scored on their first four attempts.

Franco then directed the fifth spot kick on the post for France, after which Netherlands captain Koster struck wide herself.

But the French failed again on penalty number six, this time with Meilleroux hitting the left post. Bito then had a chance to decide the game for the Netherlands, but her weak attempt was stopped by keeper Celine Deville.

It simply wasn't meant to be for France though, as Herbert sent the seventh penalty over the crossbar. Anouk Hoogendijk was calmer than the two compatriots before her and smashed it past Deville for a 5-4 penalties victory.
