Germany through to semi finals

UEFA Women's Championship 2009

Title defenders Germany are another step closer to winning the UEFA Women's Championship for the fifth consecutive time, beating Italy 2-1 in the quarter finals.

The Germans didn't need long to take the lead at Lahti Stadium in Finland, as Inka Grings collected a pass from Melanie Behringen before powering the ball into the lower left corner.

Grings, who had recovered in time from a minor injury suffered during Germany's last group game, then made it 2-0 from a Simone Laudehr cross in the 47th minute.

Italy reduced the deficit three minutes after the hour when Melania Gabbiadini enabled Patrizia Panico to finish for 2-1. It wasn't enough however, and Germany get to play their semi final against Norway on Monday.
